So…We have a 13 year old, a 9 year old and a 1 month old. Yep…same parents and no, he wasn’t a “surprise baby”. I know it seems crazy, but it was absolutely right for our family. It was as if our family unit wasn’t full….as if one of our family members wasn’t around our dinner table yet. Now…it just seems right! As a parent that has chosen to be thrown back into the sleepless nights and crying baby days, I am remembering how tough those first weeks are. I say weeks, because at about 1 month, we have all ready gotten into a little routine where baby and I only get up 2 or 3 times in a night. But still…those 2 or 3 times make me tired because each one is at least 30 minutes to 1.5 hrs of interruption. Needless to say, getting a little “me” time is something I value!
One of the things I forgot about was how thankful I would be for things that required stolen moments of mommy time:
- Painting my nails (not even going to get a pedi….cuz that requires soooo much more time!) Do you know how many times I have ruined my nails because baby has needed to be picked up in the middle of me painting them!?? But I will sacrifice my nails for baby snuggles any time!!
- Taking a nice long bath– I took a zillion of these before baby was born…and in 1 month, I’ve yet to squeeze more than 1 into my life. I’m one those super hot water, bubbles & Epsom salt, lavender oil and a great book, kind of bath takers…..and I seriously miss these!!
- Going Christmas shopping….alone. Yesterday I had run out to the store to grab some items for our Christmas Party and about 20 minutes into my trip…I got a phone call asking me how to calm down the baby because he was fussy and crying since I left….aka….”please come home and help!!!”
- Taking a nap or sleeping through a whole night. If you’ve ever had a baby, you know what I mean!
As an experienced parent, though, I know this season will pass. Soon, this sweet 1 month old will be 9 years old, just like my son is now. It will go by like a flash and I will wonder where the time went! So, I try to keep things in perspective and often say, out loud to my husband, “It’s a short season and will go by really fast!!” It helps me to stay sane!
The other thing to remember is that you are not alone!! All parents need a “time-out” sometimes and you don’t need to feel guilty or less than a super-mom when you need some time away too! This is where help from others really comes in. Ask a friend or family member to help you steal some alone time…even if they just come and your baby while you take the longest shower in your life….it will be worth it! Believe me, I’m in the middle of it right now!
Another thing I have in my favor as an experienced parent is knowing which kind of diapers work for us! We have all ready been through the testing of all the diapers on our last kiddos and I’m so happy to say that my favorite diapers (and at an amazing value – you can even print out more saving coupons here) are Luvs! We’ve tested most of the brands out there and I’m thankful that our favorite brand is a great value and even have a lovely baby scent! Luvs has made diapering baby easy and one less thing I need to worry about! I’m not going to have to worry about night time leaks with Luvs Ultra Leakguard Diapers with Nightlock Plus™! They are soft, absorbent and have large tabs for easy fastening in the wee hours of the night!
