Bone broth. It doesn’t sound exciting. In fact, it sounds a little, halloweeny scary, I know. But when you have the smoothest legs, this side of the Mississippi, bone broth gets exciting, real fast.
I started reading about bone broth when I was looking for some ways to help me heal my gut. After many years of not being very careful about avoiding gluten ( AKA eating Jenny Cookies all. the. time. ), I had a new found resolve to help my gut get back to doing its job….not have chronic inflammation, and starting to absorb more nutrients!
Bone Broth is kind of a fancy way of saying Chicken Broth that has simmered for a longer time. I wish it had a better name, like Amazing Skin Elixir or Gut Healing Super Soup…..
Anyway, a few years ago I started making my own amazing bone broth and it has been not only a great thing for my gut, but it has tons of benefits! Bone broth is chalk full of minerals, collagen , gelatin, chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, calcium, magnesium, & amino acids like arginine, glycine, and proline, that all have anti-inflammatory effects on our bodies. I also found that I hardly got sick anymore and if I did, I would load up on Bone Broth each morning and night, and my symptoms subsided.
All this, not to mention that I used chicken broth regularly to add flavor to my rice & quinoa that I cooked up in my rice cooker. It was awesome to be able to save the money I was spending on chicken broth from the store and to also add all those great nutrients to my families meals without them even knowing! HAAA!!
I started to end my night with a mug of hot bone broth to help me sleep and there was an added benefit: the chicken skin (keratosis pilaris) on the backs of my arms went away…then my husband started commenting on how soft and smooth all of my skin was….enter bone broth’s new name Amazing Skin Elixir. When my husband notices a change, its a really good thing!
Now to how to make this amazing stuff!
Step #1> Start saving your chicken bones. I make chicken wings, bone in thighs and whole roasted chickens with the secret intent of freezing the gnawed on bones for Bone Broth later.
Step #2> While stealing the bones off your family’s plates, remember to sing “Save Your Bones” to the tune of Silver Bells. This step is essential and will bring your family joy as they watch you turn into a frugal, pioneering weirdo mom right before their very eyes! They will thank you in the winter when you make them Homemade Chicken Soup out of your frozen bone broth and some noodles. I toss my bones in a plastic baggie, throw them in the freezer, then when I have enough to fill my crock pot or if I need some, I will make some bone broth.
Step #3> Grab your crock pot (if you don’t have one of these…get one TODAY! They are the best!!!), toss everything in, cover wit water, and let the magic happen!
